- A pot that feels distinctly lightweight when lifted, compared to how it feels right after watering
If you've confirmed overwatering
Let the soil dry out more than usual before the next watering, and check drainage — water should visibly flow through and out the drainage holes within a few seconds of watering, not pool on the surface. If it doesn't, the tree may need a soil correction (see the soil guide) rather than just a watering-behavior change. In more severe cases, check for root rot directly.
If you've confirmed underwatering
Water thoroughly until water runs from the drainage holes, then return to the finger-test method from the watering guide rather than switching to a rigid new schedule — a single missed watering isn't usually a crisis, but a pattern of missed waterings is what causes real damage.

If the two don't clearly match either pattern, wait 24 hours and reassess rather than guessing — a single day rarely changes the outcome either way, and acting on a wrong guess is worse than a short delay.
